Mark David’s Career History

Mark David Gerson was born in Montreal, Quebec, and is a dual Canadian-American citizen.

Before turning to writing books and coaching writers full-time, Mark David built a career in public relations, journalism and criticism. He was assistant director of public relations at Concordia University in Montreal, then worked for many years as a freelance journalist and critic. He served as Canadian correspondent for The Chronicle of Higher Education (1982–1990) and The Times Higher Education Supplement (1982–1984), and was a regular book reviewer for Quill & Quire and The Montreal Gazette and a regular theater critic for the Ottawa Journal.

His writing also appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Montreal Star and many other Canadian and US publications.

In 1991, he delivered the annual Norrie Lecture at Mount Saint Vincent University, "Canadian Higher Education at the Crossroads.” That same year, he was a panelist on "Universities & the Media” at the annual conference of the Canadian Association of University Business Officers.

Mark David has taught writing in the non-credit divisions of a number of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada and, most recently (2025), was a guest instructor in UCLA’s Writing Program.

As well, he speaks regularly at genre and consciousness-focused events, including Phoenix Fan Fusion and the Conscious Life Expo in Los Angeles, as well as at Unity and Center for Spiritual Living churches across the US.
