Letter from Mark David

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for,
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.
— “The Invitation,” Oriah Mountain Dreamer

Dear Friends of the Light,

Do you know what your heart’s desire is? Do you know what it is you truly seek from this life? Do you know what your soul yearns for? What your spirit longs for? If you do, do you know how to allow that to express through you? Do you know what your heart desires?

These are eternal questions, questions that have occupied humanity for as long as we have had an awareness of our deep inner yearnings.

Often we think we know what our heart desires when, in reality, those yearnings have become enmeshed, entangled, and confused with the yearnings of our human selves, our ego selves, our personality selves.

The fact is, most human-self desires do not stem from our highest source. Nor are they calls to live out our divinity and highest expression.

Rather, they are attempts to deny and squash those. And they arise from a place of profound, often deeply unconscious fear.

So how do we connect with and identify our heart desires?

We start by listening. We start by exploring, not from a head space but from a heart space. We start by going deep within, as deep within as we will allow ourselves to go...then deeper still.

I speak and write often about surrender. That’s the one thing that our still-evolving personality self fears most and from which it would flee most swiftly.

For in surrender we abandon all control. And in abandoning all control, we feel at our most vulnerable and most fearful.

Yet it’s that control —that universal, all-pervasive attempt to control — that keeps us from knowing our heart’s desire and prevents us from realizing it when we do know it.

So how do we leave that place of control to connect with our heart’s desire?

Meditation is one way. But even if don’t or can’t meditate, there are many meditative practices that don’t involve sitting cross-legged in the silence for 20 minutes.

When I wasn’t certain what to write to you today, I picked up my voice recorder, bundled up against the wind and went for a walk. I removed myself from the temptations of busy-ness and stepped away from their distractions. In so doing, I freed my mind and opened my heart to these words.

Walking, hiking, bicycling...taking a bath or shower...doing yoga or tai chi...being creative...anything that breaks your routine and shatters your mental pattern will help you hear the voice of your heart.

Routines can be helpful. They are also products of a mind bent on control.

Whatever dissolves the routine frees your mind from that control, which allows your heart to open and reveal to you what you never knew you knew, desires of which your conscious mind has no knowledge.

A powerful exercise is take pen and paper and go within, allowing to flow from the desires of your heart.

Even though the heart will often express its desires in worldly, even material ways, it’s important to remember that these are expressions of your heart’s desire. They are not the heart’s desire itself. The heart does not desire worldly things.

But the heart is wise. The heart will express its desires through means that you can grasp, that speak to your humanness.

Because we are in physical bodies, those desires will often express themselves in physical ways.

Long before I was making CDs of my sound healing/light-language singing, my heart would often speak to me of its desire for me to have a recording studio in my home.

My heart does not require a recording studio. It does desire that I acknowledge and act on the importance of getting my voice, words, sounds and songs out into the world in as clear and professional manner as possible. So it calls for a recording studio to let me know how important my voice is.

Perhaps I will one day have a recording studio of some sort. In the meantime, I honor my heart’s true desire — that its song be freed and heard — by recording it however I can.

Another desire that would come up frequently was to learn how to fly an airplane. Freedom, as those of you who have read my words in recent months know, is very precious to me.

During the period when that desire kept emerging, there were aspects of my life that felt anything but free. Now that my life is considerably freer, that I’m flying in other ways, the desire to fly a plane carries less of a charge.

It wasn’t about airplanes, even though it expressed itself that way. It was about freedom.

Even though our hearts can speak in very literal, physical terms, it’s important to delve deeper, into what our heart is truly saying.

Because learning to fly or building a recording studio is less important than allowing freedom to express through me and freeing my voice to ring out to you.

Activating your heart’s desire means allowing what it truly means to be active in your life. Allowing freedom to be truly active in my life. Allowing my voice to continue to speak and sing clearly in yours.

What is your heart’s desire? Do you know what it is? Can you separate it from what your mind thinks it wants?

What your mind thinks it wants is tied up in control, is tied up in security.

If there’s any fear surrounding what you think your heart desires, it’s not a heart’s desire at all. It’s an expression of fear.

Perhaps I say that my heart’s desire is for $150,000 a year. Objectively, there’s nothing wrong with desiring to live abundantly. Or is there?

Am I seeking financial independence or financial security?

There’s is a subtle yet significant difference between the two concepts. It’s that difference which will tell me whether it’s my heart or mind that’s calling it in.

Financial security is an illusion, as is any form of material-based security. It’s a constricting, fear-based desire, predicated on the notion that you will feel safe with your finances under control.

On the other hand, if you’re seeking financial independence to free you to live your potential, that’s liberating...expansive.

These are critical distinctions both in your languaging and discernment.

When you’re in doubt as to which part of you is speaking within you, focus on your breath. Let your breath guide you. Your breath is your connection with the divine, that divine that you are.

Sometime today, do whatever it is that you can to step out of your mind and into your heart. Breathe....walk...write...draw...meditate...go within. From that place, ask this question of your heart: What do you desire for me? How do you long to live through me in this lifetime, at this time in this lifetime?

Ask the question and then listen.

The answers might not come immediately, for we have so often stifled the voice of our heart that it can take some time to reconnect with it.

Be patient, for answers will come.

Listen for them. Listen to them.

Discern whether it is truly the voice of your heart or whether it comes from the voice of your fear.

Is it the voice of desire or the voice of neediness?

Is it the voice of freedom or the voice of enslavement?

Is it the voice of expansion or the voice of constriction?

Listen.

Listen.

And then surrender.

In this moment, I hear the voice of your heart, the song of your soul. Do you?

Namaste,
Mark David
